If that wound doesn’t heal, what you have is not a wound.
Anal fistula is one of those problems that seems small… but is a real pain.
It starts with a lump, then it oozes, then it seems to get better… and then it comes back.
Between itching, blemishes, and scarring that never heals, days, weeks, and months pass.
If this sounds familiar, you know how frustrating it can be.
What many people don’t know is that a fistula isn’t a wound that heals.
It’s an active tract that connects internally to the anal canal, and it won’t heal on its own—not with ointments, antibiotics, or baths.
The only real solution for a fistula is surgery.
But that doesn’t mean having to undergo aggressive surgeries or risk continence.
At ProctoPelvis, we understand that not all fistulas are the same and that not all techniques work for everyone. That’s why we don’t apply a one-size-fits-all prescription, but rather choose the most appropriate treatment based on your type of fistula, your anatomy, and your priorities.
A small thread is left inside the fistula to keep it open and allow it to drain, like an earring. Sometimes it’s the first phase of treatment, to prepare the area before closing the fistula permanently.
A minimally invasive technique that uses laser energy to close the fistula from within, without cuts or stitches. It’s virtually painless and sphincter-friendly, although it’s not the ideal option for all cases.
In some select cases, your own plasma can be used to promote tract closure. It’s a complementary technique that can enhance other techniques.
A procedure that allows the fistula’s course to be viewed from the inside with a camera and treated from within. Useful for complex fistulas or those with an uncertain course.
A surgical technique that allows the fistula to be closed without cutting the sphincters, because the path between the two muscles is cut, making it a very safe option in expert hands.
An option for very specific and complex cases, in which we need to cover the internal opening with healthy tissue. We use a “door” made of your own tissue to prevent infection from infiltrating the fistula.
The simplest, when the tract is superficial and doesn’t pass through muscle, or you have enough muscle to maintain continence. The fistula is opened so it heals from the inside out, creating a tunnel… a highway. Simple, fast, and very effective… if properly indicated.
The ideal technique is the one that best suits your case.
No more, no less.
We always explain the options before deciding, and if there are several viable options, we make the decision together.
Because a poorly treated fistula can become an ordeal, and a poorly indicated surgery can lead to avoidable consequences.
Our goal is not only to close the fistula, but to do so safely, preventing relapses and ensuring your continence.
